I found it - In OpenOffice, it’s File > Properties > Statistics to get to the word counter. It says 1324 in the document, and the progress meter says 1319 when I upload the .sxw file - that’s close enough for me, so I’ll stick to that count. Here’s my REAL word count. Looks reasonable to me:

Hmmm… OK, this is really weird. When I upload my story as a .doc the NaNoWriMo Progress meter says I’ve done 5993 words. When I upload it as a .sxw (the Open Office default), it says 1958 words. When I upload it as a .txt file, it says 1319 words.
