…Rhonda’s blog about anything and everything…

So a couple days ago the screen on my trusty fuschia Razr went dark. I could still make and receive calls, but nothing appeared on the screen… I figured I could keep nursing it along until April 10th, when I can get the full discount price on cell phones from T-Mobile (because then my contract is up)…

Today I went to call my husband, and well, no go. The phone could dial, I heard it beeping when I pushed the numbers… but when I pushed the call button, nada.

*sigh*

So I cashed my $25 check I get from work every month (it’s supposed to go towards our internet bill, but whatever) and headed to the store on State St that buys and sells used cell phones. I looked at their used Tmobile phones - most of them were still 60-100 bucks for a used basic camera enabled cell phone… So I opted for the cheapest one they had, a Nokia candy bar style with no extra frills. It makes calls, and receives calls.

This still leaves me wanting a nice phone - because now the phone I have has even less features than the phone I had 4 years ago! Anyhow, I know the form factor and features I like, and I know that I need to be practical - I’d love a Treo or an iPhone or one of the new Sidekicks, but I know that’s just not going to happen. At all. So I know I want a cell phone with a camera (better than VGA quality), Bluetooth (so I can link to my LifeDrive and use it to type and store important text messages), and an alarm clock (so that I can set it to ring on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 so that I don’t ever forget to pick up Pan from school). I much prefer slider phones to flip phones, and it needs to fit in my pocket.

So I’ve narrowed it down to 4 phones, any of which I’d be glad to have (not picky, they all do the same thing!)

Samsung t629 (my husband has this one and likes it a lot. I guess I’d have to put a sticker on mine, or something, so we don’t accidentally swap phones)
Samsung Katalyst (this is the one-step-up from the t629, but really isn’t much different except it can do wi-fi calling from home, whatever that means. Other than that, same features as the one above, but it does look different enough that we shouldn’t get them mixed up)
Samsung t819 (this is the newest Samsung slider - and again, not really different from the other 2, except it’s brown and has a different nav pad, more like the Motorola one I like)
Motorola RIZR Z3 (slightly better camera, slightly less wide, has a mini USB plug, so I can plug it straight into my computer instead of needing to get a mini SD card reader, and I can use the Motorola computer software to connect and sync contacts and calendar data - I think this one is my favorite, but my husband swears by the Samsung phones…)

And then the bum-ugly runner up, the phone I don’t really like, but if it’s the only one I can get, I’d be satisfied with…

Nokia 5300 XpressMusic - Black (I’m sorry, this one just looks plain SILLY. But it’s only going to cost me $40 when I am free to upgrade my phone. It’s feature set is good, though, with Bluetooth, 1.3 MP camera, alarm clock, and apparently an FM radio…)

Here’s a comparison link, to see them side by side - Clickity.

So hopefully in a couple months I’ll have a nice phone (Even if I do have to go with the Ugly Duckling of the lot, at least it will do all that I ask of it!)
