On a little side trip through the internet, I started looking at voice types, and I was wondering what I am now - when I was a lot younger, I got classified as a mezzo-soprano, but since then I’ve gained almost a whole octave in range, both above and below. But my highest notes have always been just a touch too airy to want to call myself a lyric soprano (and I would need a loooot of work to be close to coloratura, I just can’t carry those high notes without sounding a bit reedy), and I don’t have the push of a spinto soprano. I’ve got the range of a Wagerian soprano, but I don’t have the oomph or maturity that would take.
So, I read my way through some articles on various websites, and oh-ho-ho! I’d never heard of a soubrette soprano, but that is seriously me, spot on! I wonder why I never heard this from my vocal teachers?
From wiki: “A sweet, lightweight voice whose range is mostly in middle voice.” Jah, I always get told my voice is sweet and light and angelic. But like I said, I feel like my voice is often reedy or airy above the A above the staff (A6), unless I’m really warmed up, and then it comes quite nicely. When I sing below G below the staff, I feel like it’s also reedy, and I think I’m probably just singing too much in my throat.
So I guess I’m a soubrette with the ability to become a nice lyric soprano with practice and guidance. Too bad I have to wait a little longer for Matt to finish school before I can go back.
